Students stand with mural;

A year-long art project by C. Milton Wright High School students has resulted in a permanent installation at UM Upper Chesapeake Health, where a student-designed mural now greets patients and families in a transitional walkway of the hospital's new wing.

The project began last fall through a partnership between HCPS Fine Arts Curriculum Specialist Dawn Stone and Shena Matsos, Director of Marketing and Communications at UM Upper Chesapeake Health, who wanted to create an uplifting, welcoming moment for patients coming off the elevator during what can be a challenging time. Art teacher Jana Thomas brought the project to her upper-level art students, who collaborated to design a 30 by 48 inch piece painted on gypsum board celebrating the Chesapeake Bay, the Bay Bridge, Maryland, and the area's maritime heritage.

Seven students worked together on the project, brainstorming individually before combining their ideas into one cohesive permanent installation. The mural has been mounted directly in the space at UM Upper Chesapeake Health, where it will serve the community for years to come.

Watch the video below to see the students and their work.

Students who participated in the project include Hailey Nguyen, Heidi Frey, Ella Garcia, and Natalie Burns, along with Paola Mendez, Maddie Sabella, and Yufei Chen. The project was led by art teacher Jana Thomas.
