Students in front of a tractor

Darlington Elementary School closed out the 2024–2025 school year by celebrating the deep agriculture roots and traditions of the Darlington community with a hands-on celebration of local agriculture thanks to the farmers who help shape the surrounding community.

The event connected students with the land, people, and practices that make rural life in Harford County so unique. Throughout the day, students participated in a series of interactive stations designed to teach them about modern farming, environmental science, and animal care.

Students learned how today’s farming equipment can perform multiple tasks at once, like planting seeds and fertilizing soil in a single pass. They were introduced to the science of agronomy, including the tools and techniques used to promote healthy soil and crop growth. Other lessons focused on plant life and nutrient management, the importance of pollinators and the social structure of bee colonies, and the care and responsibilities associated with raising horses.

The event gave students a chance to see real-world applications of what they learn in the classroom while building appreciation for the agricultural traditions that surround them.

Darlington Elementary would like to extend a sincere thank you to the community members who helped bring this event to life: Jeff and Rick Holloway, David Boniface, Kat Rutt, Aunaleigha and Leon Walker, Mark and Mardi Herman—and of course, Petal the horse.

This event was certainly a hightlight of the school year, reminding students that learning doesn't just happen inside four walls—and that strong communities are built through connection, care, and hands-on experiences.
