Our Learning in 5th grade:

Math:

​In May we will cover briefly Topic 14 (graphing using coordinates, Topic 15 (algebra and patterns) and Topic16 (Geometry) before Math MCAP testing on May 14thand May 15th. After testing we will revisit each Topic to reinforce and practice the skills once again. Homework will continue to be assigned Monday through Thursday nights, with a Quest on what has been learned most Fridays. ​​

Reading:

​We are in our second round of fantasy book clubs, and finishing up our class fantasy read aloud. Later this month, we will start our last unit about the Civil Rights Movement. Students will be using their nonfiction reading skills to research different events of the Civil Rights movement and share their learning with others. Ask your child what they are researching. ​​

Writing:

We are wrapping up our fantasy unit. Later this month we will be researching and writing about Civil Rights Activists. Students will choose an activist to research using Pebble Go Next and other research tools. Students will share their learning through different writing activities. Ask your child who they are learning about! ​​

Science and Social Studies:

​This month we will be moving into our final social studies unit, The Challenges of American Political and Civic Life. Students will learn how the government has evolved to expand the meaning of "We the People," how institutions define and defend freedom, and how communities support and expand freedom for their members.

Reminders:

This month we have two fieldtrips – Southampton Middle School on Monday, May 18 and Fort McHenry on Thursday, May21. Please sign and return the permission forms so your child can attend. There is also a $3fee for the Fort McHenry fieldtrip, which can be paid through School Cash Online. We will need chaperones for the Fort McHenry field trip.
