Students at Patterson Mill Middle School took part in a seed-starting project this spring that was designed with every learner in mind.
Through a partnership with Harford County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services, Itinerant Teacher of the Visually Impaired and Blind Krista Harris Hermann worked with students on a project that made plant science accessible and engaging for all. Students decorated their pots in braille and planted seeds in clear containers, allowing them to observe plant development both above and below the soil line. The multisensory approach gave students a unique opportunity to connect science to everyday life in a meaningful and inclusive way.
Food and Nutrition Services provided pots, potting soil, seed packets, gloves, and trowels through grant funding to support the project. The collaboration reflects the department's commitment to partnering with educators to create innovative, student-centered learning experiences across Harford County Public Schools.
